Salus iT500 Smart Thermostat Review

Salus iT500 Wireless Smart Thermostat Review. Since the introduction of being able to control heater and boiler settings remotely, Smart Thermostats have risen in popularity significantly. The ability to be able to control thermostat settings from something as simple as an App on a Smartphone from anywhere (including with a laptop or desktop PC) has made a lot of peoples lives that little bit more convenient.

The Salus iT500 has been around for quite a few years now, and by most standards, while not without a few problems (with a big majority of those having something to do with the App), it's a fairly reliable little unit. It makes use of your Internet connection + installed iT500 App to send requests wirelessly to the gateway / WiFi router / iT500 in your home.

Please Note: You don't need an Internet connection to be able to actually use this Thermostat like you would any other. Heating can still be controlled manually.

I was going to write a review about the iT500 but then came across the video below by Bret Bardsley, and he pretty much covers everything that I was going to touch upon. Touching on things like installation and general set up, to the different modes and timer options. However. I will add a few troubleshooting tips below for those who have a simple issue / question that needs resolving.

Salus iT500 Smart Thermostat Video UK Review

Salus iT500 Quick Troubleshooting Guide

My screen has locked. How do I unlock it?

Hold both the Back Arrow key and Tick (both on the left) together at the same time for 3 - 5 seconds. That will unlock the screen.

How to Pair (connect wirelessly) the control unit to the iT500RX receiver box

At the bottom of the receiver there is a space for a pin, or as Salus recommend, a paper clip. Push it up into this space. Then its just a case of keeping an eye on the lower switches LED light colour on the receiver (will be red when preparing to pair), and watching the sequence icons on the control unit itself. When the lower switch's LED light turns green on the receiver, it is now successfully paired.

Where to download the iT500 PLUS App

The new "PLUS" release of the App has had a few of the bugs fixed that were in the previous version. You can download the App here for Apple devices (iPhone / MAC), and download here from Google Play for Android based systems (Sony, Samsung etc)

Forgot my password - Can't login

How to reset password. With the registration details you created when you registered an account on the Salus website, just go to the reset page on the official Salus website and request a reset. Salus will guide you through the process to reset your password (very easy).

Offline - Connection not established. How to reboot and try again.

Reboot / restart the connection process by taking the battery(s) out of the iT500 unit and leaving them out for 10 - 15 seconds. Then put them back in and let it try to re-establish a fresh connection. If this doesn't work, either try disconnecting the gateway from the router for around 1 minute, and reconnect, or turn the gateway off from the mains for a few seconds, then turn it back on. That should hopefully do the trick.

I need to see the Manual / Wiring Diagram

The wiring diagram, as well as in-depth, helpful instructions on the unit can be found here

Where can I find a full installation Guide

I was going to direct to YouTube for the video, but I put it below for convenience. Checkout the installation video guide below.

Some people prefer the high-end technology of a Hive or Nest system. Although it looks quite Hi-Tech with its dull but very clear digital touch screen display, the iT500 is somewhat basic when it comes to Smart controllers. But in some ways that's a good thing, and will suit a lot of people better than some of the more complex units. And let's not forget, more advanced technology in a unit doesn't necessarily mean better practicality and reliability.

In fact, just compare the reviews for many of the Hive models and the Salus iT500, you will quickly see that they're pretty evenly matched when it comes to happy customers. I didn't compare Nest, because credit where its due, their range, especially the Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Generation, is excellent. And their review score is close to outstanding. Looking for the next Salus model up? Do a search for the iT600.Tip, or personal opinion: The model reviewed here is much better.

I have been using this thermostat for 3 years now.
The new IT500 Plus app allows you to use cycled runs without over and undershooting! Also there is an option to correct the measured temperature of both sensors.

Biggest hit would be if they made it kind of open source!

How do I get the heating to work manually, without wifi/broadband, as I have no Internet yet?

As long as its all wired up properly just use it manually by programming it from the unit. See the links below for more information:
